LANDSCAPE OBSERVATIONAL STUDIES
About the artist
Landscape Observational Studies UK emerged from a shift in my photographic practice.
For many years I worked in environments where directing and shaping moments formed part of the photographic process. At Rousham Gardens, while photographing garden historian Advolly Richmond OBE, I adopted a different approach. Richmond was given complete freedom to move through the landscape without interruption or guidance, while I worked solely as an observer.
What began as a photographic study of how expertise is expressed through engagement with landscape became something else. In relinquishing direction, I discovered a different way of seeing. Rather than constructing moments, I became interested in observing them as they unfolded.
That experience established the foundation of an ongoing body of work exploring how meaning emerges through movement, attention, interpretation and place.
